Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media
Social media is a great way to communicate with large audiences and easily share your lifestyle on a daily basis with your followers. However, there are a few downsides to it as well.
One of the main advantages of social media is that you can reach a large group of people at the same time. This allows you to save time when updating your friends or family of your day. Social media such as Instagram can be as private or public as the user wants and this is useful for both personal and business use. Social media also lets you get to know your friends better and get an insight into their personal life. Social media allows you to connect to people all around the world and one can inform and update anyone at anytime. It is also an efficient way of spreading awareness as you can easily share posts or stories online. Social media encourages creativity amongst the community. It allows people with common interests to unite and share their talents. It is a platform which allows people's voices to be heard which may often be ignored in society, allowing people to be more confident and share their opinions.
However, there are risks of using social media and it is debatable as to whether or not they outweigh the positives. Although sharing your daily life with others may be interesting to some, for others, it is an opportunity to portray their negative opinions. There may also be backlash involved, and this may lead to negative consequences in the future especially in a world like today where there is an emphasis on digital and online sectors. There is also a risk of fraud and identity theft, only a small amount of information about a person is needed in order to 'steal their identity'. Not only this, there is an invasion of privacy, as everything you put on social media will always remain there, even if you delete it.
Cyber bullying is a prominent issue that many people face, this is becoming more and more relevant in today's online world as an increased number of people are starting to use social media. Cyber bulling can impact a person's mental health and it may take a while for the person to overcome this. There is also the disadvantage of fake news spreading rapidly online. Fake news may be manipulated and may look believable and this leads to false information being passed amongst the community. Another downside is the anonymity on social media. Identifying who a person really is online may be difficult as they may portray themselves as someone completely different in real life. This can lead to more scams and the manipulation of vulnerable people. Not knowing who is really behind a profile also makes it easier to post hate comments which the person themselves may not say in real life.
It can be seen that there are many risks to social media, however there is still a benefit that comes out of it as it allows people from all over the world to connect.
